FM synthesis with XILS

Postby dennisdickler » Fri Jan 29, 2010 6:07 am

Hi!
I'm trying to create FM patches in XILS. It should be possible but I can't get them to sound right.
For example: Ill take oscillator one sine on, take oscillator 2's triangle and connect it to oscillator one's frequency, turn osc 2's volume part up, turn the detune feature off, make sure both are pitch tracking at 50, make sure they are tuned to exactly the same frequency.
Despite all this - it seems like XILS is incapable of standard fm sounds. The sounds it produces instead sound ring modulated and off pitch, which makes me think that the pitch of the carrier and modulator (1 and 2 osc) are not matching, even with the detune all the way down.
Is there any way I can make more usable, standard FM sounds with this synth?

Interesting question. I haven't tried this with the XILS 3 yet, but I'll do some experimenting and post the results here.

I must say I've never got FM sounds I'm happy with from any other synths apart from dedicated FM ones - with one exception. The Arturia Moog Modular V (which I think Xavier had a hand or three in developing?) makes brilliant FM patches. There's an FM patch bank of mine doing the rounds at the moment for the MMV, which I can send to you if you have one. I'll find out if the XILS 3 can do anything similar as soon as I have time to get down to it. It sounds like you've already done what's neccesary, but you never know.

FM synthesis kind of works but would be less limited if individual osc level would be an option in the connections menu.
Wish... ;)

I'm not sure if this is the answer or not, but I just tried something that might have potential. I'm going to try it later with some more complex patching, but here's what I did:

I tried modulating osc one sine with osc two triangle and got the results you described.

Then I wondered how it might be if I filtered osc two to try to bring the triangle down to something nearer a sine. Then it occured to me that the filter when self-oscillating is a sine, pretty much.

So if I had osc one and a self-oscillating filter I'd have sine on sine. So I took an output from the filter in the signals section and patched osc one sine to filter in the controls section. Ocs one and the filter are both adjustable for frequency and level.

I'm not sure if that's what's needed or whether I've missed anything vital. Let me know.
